Abstract
This study aimed to examine the unique effect of emotional distress tolerance on social performance anxiety and to explore whether it would act as a moderator on the association between beliefs of excessive demand for others¡¯ approval and social performance anxiety. 288 undergraduate students completed the questionnaires measuring beliefs of excessive demand for others¡¯ approval, emotional distress tolerance, social performance anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Beliefs of excessive demand for others¡¯ approval was positively associated with social performance anxiety and depression, whereas emotional distress tolerance was negatively correlated with the others. Beliefs of excessive demand for others¡¯ approval was a significant predictor of social performance anxiety, when controlling for depressive symptoms and emotional distress tolerance. Emotional distress tolerance was also a significant predictor of social performance anxiety, when controlling for depressive symptoms and beliefs of excessive demand for others¡¯ approval. In addition, beliefs of excessive demand for others¡¯ approval interacted with emotional distress tolerance such that it had a stronger effect on social performance anxiety under higher level of emotional distress tolerance than under lower level of emotional distress tolerance. These findings suggest that clinicians should focus on both beliefs of excessive demand for others¡¯ approval and emotional distress tolerance in order to improve social performance anxiety. Finally, implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
